Danielle Durchslag opens first UK solo exhibition CHOSEN during Frieze Week London

CHOSEN, a curatorially awarded exhibition by Danielle Durchslag at the Four Corners Gallery, marks the New York-based artist’s first solo show outside the USA.  Opening during London’s Frieze week, CHOSEN will present a selection of video pieces from her critically acclaimed “BOUNTY” series, shown for the first time ever as an ensemble. Her internationally lauded short film, Eleanor of Illinois, starring Broadway legend, and two-time Oliver award nominee, Judy Kuhn (Les Misérables, 1987; Pocahontas, 1995, Fiddler on the Roof, 2018), is the centrepiece of the show, and will play on a loop inside the gallery’s largest viewing room. Other video works, as well as a photographic window installation by the artist, will be on view as well.

Durchslag makes video work rooted in film history that challenges the norms of traditional moving image storytelling. The pieces in CHOSEN incorporate audio and visuals from a wide range of classic films portraying family wealth, the economic experience Durchslag herself comes from. Employing sophisticated sound editing, animation, voice artists, and live-action elements, she refashions these original works into new, dynamic portraits of her lived experience of dynastic Jewish affluence. Simultaneously narrative and experimental, the videos in CHOSEN challenge the technical norms of contemporary film production and video art, while examining the fraught topic of class identity.

The artist’s work has been recently lauded in Art Forum, which credited her with identifying a new artist movement, “blowing up and radically expanding the idea of Jewish allegiance.” The pieces on view at Four Corners are equally daring in their content and form, and Durchslag will attend the opening preview event on the evening of October 13th, from 6:30 to 8:30pm, where she will be on hand to discuss them in person. In November, she will have video work in a major contemporary exhibition at the Jewish Museum of the city of Vienna, making CHOSEN the beginning of her European tour.

Danielle Durchslag comments, I am thrilled to show my work in London’s East End at the same time as one of the most important art fairs out there, especially at Four Corners Gallery. As an artist making progressive art about complex, challenging topics, I’m thrilled and honored to show in an European institution committed to actively encouraging meaningful political discourse.
