Museum of the Home to host free family design and construction workshops with architecture educators MATT+FIONA

This summer, Museum of the Home and architecture educators MATT+FIONA are inviting families to get hands-on with the world of design and construction at free family workshops. The Museum will host drop-in family days where visitors can contribute to building pieces of a new play structure for the Museum and learn about sustainable building practices.

This new structure will be up throughout the summer holidays. On every Tuesday in August this will be a facilitated space with free, drop-in workshops running. MATT+FIONA will run the first workshops, after which they will be run by different facilitators and Museum of the Home’s Learning Team all around the themes of building and making. Once the summer holidays are over, the play structure will find its permanent home in the heart of the museum for all families to explore and enjoy for years to come. Making this a unique chance for visitors to build a piece of the Museum’s future.

The structure has been designed during the summer term in sessions with a local primary school. MATT+FIONA worked with Year 4 students at Randal Cremer Primary School to co-design a permanent play structure for Museum of the Home. The school was invited to the Museum to embark on this exciting journey to design a modular, fully accessible, and interactive play structure. MATT+FIONA are building this, and it will launch in the Musuem’s Welcome Atrium on Friday 21st July.

MATT+FIONA is an architecture education organisation that trusts and supports young people to create more inclusive and representative spaces. There are three strands to their work; BUILD, LEARN and CONNECT. Since 2016, MATT+FIONA has worked with leading community and cultural organisations, universities and schools to create and deliver more than 25 buildings, installations and meanwhile spaces, collaborating with more than 4,000 young people and 200 volunteers across the UK.

Sustainability is at the heart of this project, implementing this in the build itself but also instilling these concepts in the way the creators of the future think about their practice. MATT+FIONA comment, We recognise the huge impact built environment design can have on the environment. Where possible we always source materials from sustainable, low carbon or recycled sources, and again – where possible – try to ensure all project materials have an afterlife in instances where projects are temporary.
